Are we talking Dune type spice here? Enabling navigators to go through warp space or something? Do we even have warp space in this game? I guess it's an open question. -- TrevisMartin -- 22 Sep 2006 - 00:31:19
No.. it may be able to be taken as a drug, but I orignally meant that it needed to be used in the device itself. Like, the warp engine has to be built with this material ... and it takes a lot to build one, so a ftl machine would be VERY valuable, and would be constantly fought over.
That's my take anyway... i was thinking if it was ingested, it granted superhuman powers... That's how I'm reading my two tenets anyway.. John? -- SeanHess -- 22 Sep 2006 - 03:46:20
Well, I left it deliberately ambiguous so someone else could further define it. Do they use this stuff in their engines to slip into a sort of "hyperspace"? Do they use it to build stable wormholes or jumpgates? -- JohnHalsey -- 22 Sep 2006 - 10:26:44
Given we seem to be moving to a less techno / science feel we could adopt something more naturalistic feeling. I was thinking something like Ley Lines, so jump lanes might be called Ghost Ways, Dragon Lines, Ether Channels? Someone bandied around the idea of having certain points in space be mathematical nodes where ftl / jump was possible, so the inspiration could come from there: Identity Poles, Nodal Singularities, Formulae Nodes (has shades of SLA in there), maybe humanity could be low tech but with advanced mathematics? Just brain dumping here -- DaveMG -- 22 Sep 2006 - 10:52:37
Yeah, I thought of (but I thought I never posted) the idea about the mathematical nodes. I kind of dropped the idea because it sounded like it conflicted with the "soft" sci-fi feel.
I still like it though. I'm definitely thinking that the material is required in the hardware to make the jump. -- SeanHess -- 22 Sep 2006 - 14:00:25
To clarify this a little more... the material is used to create renewable / permanent technological devices... for instance, the hyperspace engines built with this last indefinitely. [1]
Also, small arms can be made with the material (although they are very rare), and are particularly devastating [1]

To make a fact what we were talking about in the AlienLifeforms :
Humans can use this rare material to give them a temporary form of telepathy, allowing them to interact in galactic soceity.
